As a seminary community we often don't get to share much of Christmas with each other. This will be a time for us to share our stories of Christmas past, present, and future with one another. We will also have a white elephant exchange. Please bring a small gift (potentially humorous) that you have not spent any money on. The entire Bethany community is invited to attend: students, faculty, staff, and family.

With all the other questions you will be answering while studying for your finals, here is an opportunity to shift gears and take a break. You can spend all day cooking or just come for a free meal & judging at 5 pm, but either way ...

The time has come to once again answer life's most savory question: Whose Cuisine Reigns Supreme?

Whether you're a seasoned chef or a budding foodie; whether your culinary abilities are borderline-gourmet or microwave-from-a-box, all are welcome to participate. We will need at least 2 teams of 2-4 people each. Each team will receive a list of possible vegetarian-friendly secret ingredients a week before the competition. Competitors will meet at 10 am at Bethany and the Chairperson will reveal the secret ingredient to all. Teams will then have all afternoon to create at least one dish per team member using the theme ingredient. All cooking must be complete and all dishes delivered to the gathering area by 5:00 pm.

A time for sharing how our relationships of all kinds affect us and our ministry; a time for those who are not in relationships to share their struggles with society's expectations regarding relationships; a time for those who are in relationships with those in the ministry but are not in ministry positions themselves.

As human beings we all experience relationships with other humans, and so everyone is invited to come and share their stories concerning relationships. A light meal will be provided. We will begin with the meal and fellowship at 6pm and transition into our time of sharing around 6:30.

This fee tax seminar will be held on Monday, March 12 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in room 20 of the Bethany Center. It will cover what every seminary student needs to know about education deductions and credits. And for those who are licensed, ordained, or hoping to become so, they can come find out what happens when clergy and income taxes come face to face.

We'll start with an overview of the tax breaks for education that apply to graduate students. Then we'll spend the rest of our time on clergy taxes. We'll cover the definitions of clergy and clergy income, when the special tax rules on clergy apply, and the two taxing systems that apply to all ministerial income earned by clergy.

Travis Poling and Anna Lisa Gross will show a short video and facilitate discussion around beginning an A Place Apart covenant group in Richmond. All who are curious are invited to attend. Remember to bring old batteries and printer cartridges to campus on Thursday! Throwing such things in the trash can release harmful chemicals into our soil and groundwater, and who wants that?! Some of these items can be reused, and all of them can be disposed of safely.
There will be a collection box in the Bethany gathering area or bring your toxic trash to the "More than just affordable computers" workshop on Thursday evening (http://twic.scs.earlham.edu/?q=node/623). Old batteries will be recycled through the Clear Creek Food Co-op, and Rosa's Office Supplies will donate to the Cope Environmental Center for every printer cartridge we bring them. The Collective is dedicated to creating performances, workshops, retreats and events that raise consciousness on issues of peace and justice.

Ms. Wagner, founder of the Collective, lived at a homeless shelter for people with HIV/AIDS for two years. Inspired by this experience, Wagner commissioned Teresa Weed to create "Deep Listening". The play has been performed at health care facilities, conferences, schools and conventions.

Greetings and welcome back!
One of the fun traditions that Bethany has is to have a Bethany Bash! This is an opportunity for current students to meet the new students who have joined our community. This year, we will be watching an outdoor movie at my house! We will have pizza provided, courtesy of Student Leadership Team, and ask that if you are coming, that you bring either a snack/dessert or a drink. We are asking that you arrive at 8:00 and encourage you to reconnect and work on beginning other relationships. We will be watching Night at the Museum. So, let me put it this way:

WHAT: Bethany Bash!
WHERE: 415 Randolph Street, Richmond IN (The Saylor House)
WHEN: Friday August 31 8:00 PM, Movie starts at 9:00

Parking is street parking, which means that it is sort of limited. So, I would encourage you to carpool, walk or bike here. So, here are some directions, since not everyone knows where I live:

Leaving from the Front Door of the Seminary (The one on route 40)
Make a right on 40 and proceed to the light in the Left Turn lane
At the light make a left onto NW 5th Street
Proceed 5 blocks and make a right on Randolph Street
Half way down the block, on the right side of the street, is 415 Randolph Street.

If you get lost, call my cell phone (717 817 8726). I will affix something to point out the place so that you can see it easily.
If you have any questions, please contact any member of SLT (Matt McKimmy, Haley Goodwin, Nan Erbaugh, Anna Lisa Gross, Amy Gall Ritchie, Brandon Grady or Lee Saylor).

We are looking forward to seeing you there!
God Bless
